Well! Friday, the 13th – a great day to launch the new site.
In the ancient world, Friday the 13th was sacred to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love as the day Friday was named after the Norse version of Aphrodite as it’s ruled by the planet Venus which is where the name comes from – Freya’s Day.
The number 13 was considered special because the old calendars were based on the lunar cycle of 13 months so 13 was a number considered sacred to the Goddess (which is why there was such a widespread campaign to distort the number 13 & Friday, the 13th in particular as evil during the height of anti-feminine theology).
Traditionally people celebrated by taking the day off work to make love! Personally, I’m all for reclaiming that holi-day! Even if it’s like Betty Dobson’s book, ‘Sex for One’ – after all, the main lesson our inner Aphrodite must learn is self-love.
It all changed with the Romans who demanded duty to the state over devotion to one’s beloved – that’s where we started going downhill – with the empirical agenda of acquiring external power at the cost of honouring one’s heart I reckon. That’s when the calendar changed to the Gregorian calendar honouring the 12 mths of the sun. Hence the push to honour both the lunar & solar cycles if we’re to be balanced…
So, as I sit here in my pink fluffy bathrobe – after 3 all-nighters stretching my inner male in the realm of cyberspace to get the new site finished…I think the way I will celebrate Freya today is simply by painting my toenails pink with an Italiano coffee.
